Sometimes our lives take an unexpected turn that we never could foresee coming. And so it goes that in 1998, the property at 112 S. Washington was suddenly available for purchase. We decided to make an offer, never expecting to buy it, and low and behold, our bid was the highest. Once we purchased the property Bob and I looked at each other and said, “Now what are we going to do with this?” Bob wanted to tear the house down and make a larger parking lot for Alward’s Market. But, being the sentimental fool that I am, and as it was originally my Great Aunt’s house, I didn’t have the heart to demolish our quaint little bungalow. So, we decided to clean it up and either use it for a rental (which didn’t appeal to either of us very much) or Bob thought it would be a great antique shop (which it would have, if we only had known something about antiques, besides being one ourselves!). I then said “Let’s open a little gift shop! You know…I’ll put stuff on the porch and in the main living room, and if it goes well, we’ll add on from there!” That idea lasted until the end of my first buying trip. I returned home with so much on order that we needed to use the entire house to merchandise it all. And so here we are 9 years later, still plugging away and having fun.
